Submarine Energy Systems
Australia's largest infrastucture project, the Basslink Interconnector, is powered by
Prysmian Submarine Energy Systems and, at approximately 295km, was the longest underwater
power transmission system in the world at that time. Appointed by Basslink Pty Limited,
Prysmian provided a solution through the manufacture and installation of sub sea
transmission cables that now link Tasmania to the National Electricity Grid. The cables
were specifically designed to suit conditions in Bass Strait and comprise a 1500 mm² high
voltage direct current cable, a 1400 mm² medium voltage cable and a 12 fibre optic cable for
station-to-station data transmission and telecommunications purposes. Manufactured in
Prysmian's Naples factory, the cables were shipped in three stages to Bass Strait by the
Prysmian owned and operated cable laying vessel C/S Giulio Verne.
